TW: Rape, rape culture, victim blaming

I’m thinking that the documentary I’m going to make this school year is going to involve precisely this dichotomy: People in the US are constantly horrified when someone who has rape priors ends up doing something that garners them more attention (like murdering a victim, using “extreme” violence, etc). We hear cries of “This person was arrested before and no one prosecuted?!?!” And every time I want to say, “Yeah, because DAs have to battle with a jury pool who have a very limited notion of what a rape victim is which leads to them rejecting a lot of cases and a lot of rapists going free.” We can’t have it both ways. You can’t want to hold perpetrators accountable legally while not holding them accountable culturally by focusing on blaming victims rather than perpetrators. I think this could be a really interesting site of exploration.
